reflection for day 8

Today marks the last day of our CDS.

It's been a great journey,
and i will miss every single one of my classmate!
And of course,
I will miss MS FARIDAH!

Today we have to finish up our report,
and hand it up.
And we have a presentation soon.

Everyone is in 'stress' mode now,
and rushing to complete the portfolio.

This CDS is definitely a very useful one
as i will definitely be researching a lot in the future,
and i will take the skills with me when i go out to work.

I have enjoyed every moment of this CDS,
and i hope do did the rest.

THANK YOU FOR THIS WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE!

Reflection for day 7

We had a test on day 7, and i scored 16/20!
Was really happy because i was scored badly for the previous test.
Studying till late obviously paid off.

After that, we did our report, as we had to hand it up the next day.

We also learn how to use wiki.
We had a wiki page,
and we were required to post about
"social networking sites ethics".

At first, i was frustrated
as i researched for information,
and someone deleted it.
But after awhile,
we got used to posting on our wiki page,
and everyone contributed to producing a good page.

From this activity,
i have learnt that wiki is all about trusting
and community spirit.

Other people are allowed to edit your work,
and you are allowed to edit theirs.
Through this,
we can constantly improve
and we can correct each other.

We have to submit our portfolio soon,
and we also have a presentation!

I hope i do well for my presentation :)

reflection for day 6

For the first half of the day,
we had to do a report!

We had to evaluate one of the internet resource that we have chosen.
At first, i chose ezinearticles but i decided to change to
http://www.youthaidscoalition.org/
as it is more focused to my topic on AIDS and HIV.

We have to evaluate it based on 8 factors -
purpose, coverage, authority, accuracy, currency, accessibility, presentation and arrangement and usability.
I find that doing this report is easier than the previous report,
as it is straight forward
and we have a template to guide us in writing the report.
I didn't manage to finish the report,
but i was quite pleased at the amount of work that i managed to do in a couple of hours.

After lunch, we were told to do an activity called "My Dream Holiday".
We had to blog about where our dream holiday would be.

I chose Austria!
I watched "The sound of music" many times since i was a kid,
and i've always wanted to go to the country
where they filmed the show,
as the nature there is simply breathtaking!

Last year, i had to do a research on Austria for a project,
and i found out that The sound of music was filmed there.
I felt amazed while looking at photos of Austria,
and i want to see it with my own eyes!

We also had to state which evaluation criteria we had used
to eveluate the website that we used
to find information about our dream holiday.

For me, i used the evaluation criteria
as i want to know the latest news
and information about the country.

Lastly, we formed grps and we had a discussion on youtube.
We had to write the good and bad points of youtube, and the future of youtube.
After 5 mins, we will change groups and will contribute more ideas.
At the end of the activity,
each group had a long list of ideas!

Throught this activity,
i realised that youtube has many good points,
but bad points as well.
I think that youtube will continue to grow,
and we will keep using youtube in the future.

my dream holiday

My dream holiday is to go to...

AUSTRIA!

Austria is a very historical place, and many historical events happened there!
For example, Austria was known as Austria-Hungary way back before World War1.
Austria-Hungary was the country who issued a declaration of War,
thus starting World War 1, and then it led to World War 2.

It is also well-known as the place where they shot the movie The Sound Of Music.

Austria is well known for the beautiful scenery. When i choose my holiday destination, i always remember that i want to go somewhere that is very different from Singapore.

Unlike Singapore, Austria is very peaceful. I would like the experience peacefulness, instead of the usual fast-paced society that we live in.

I also want to visit a place where there are many beautiful natural hills, mountains, plants and flowers.

I used Currency to evaluate the multimedia website for my dream holiday as i want the website to be up-to-date so that i get the latest news and photos about Austria!

Here are some photos of beautiful Austria.

I WANNA GO TO AUSTRIA!

Reflection for day 5

On day 5, Ms Faridah promised us that we will not be doing any intensive work.

We started off the day by doing an online quiz based on lectured 1 to 5.
Each student were given different question.
I did not score well - i just passed with a score of 10/20 :(

After the test, we were told that we were going to do Role Playing.
We had to visit talkingcock.com, and we were supposed to take different roles.
My group took the role of foreign workers,
while other groups took the roles of Prime Minister and Singaporeans.

Firstly, my group searched talkingcock.com
for articles, videos and cartoons about foreign workers
to determind how foreign workers would react to the website.

The role playing was fun,
and i have learnt that different groups of people
may react differently to a website.

I also learnt that we may offend some people
because of the website,
even thought it was meant to be as a joke.

Reflections for day 4

On day 4, we first had a sharing session on our participation in the online forum.
I posted on http://www.hivforum.com/, asking abt the effects of HIV and AIDS on youths and what the government can do to change the effects, but no one replied my thread! Some of my classmates had replies, but it wasnt relevant to their question and topic.

Then Zach told me that many people replied to his thread in just a few seconds.
So i decided to also post on his forum, which is http://www.golivewire.net/forums/
I received 4 replies, and they are relevant to the questions that i asked!

Next, we were told that we were going to do A REPORT.

My first reaction was WHAT? REPORT? I HATE REPORTS!
But i find that writing the report was quite fun!

We had a sample report, and i used it as a guide to start writing the report.
Firstly, i was quite hesitant about starting, as i was unsure.
But after asking my friends who have already started, i got a clearer idea on how to draw up the report.

The report took quite some time to do,
as we not only have to type words,
we also need to take screenshots of
Google and MetaCrawler.

After doing the report, we had an online discussion on the OLE-BB website.
We had to share about how internet has enriched my academic life,
and illustrate using an internet resource we learnt in EIR.

I think that the online discussion was useful,
as not only do we get to share our experience using internet with each other,
but we also learnt of new ways on how to enrich our academic life with internet.

Many of my classmates said that before EIR,
they usually use only Google or Yahoo! to research.
But now, we have learnt how to use MetaCrawler and Google Scholar
which some of them find think are better than the usually search engines.

I enjoyed the online discussion very much!
Not only do we get to post threads,
we can also comment on other threads posted by our classmates,
and we can share our views with everyone.

Reflection on Day 3

So today, we learnt that there are other types of search engines other than the ones such as google and yahoo.

Firstly, there is META SEARCH.
Meta searches other search engines,
and lists down the BEST results from the other search engines.
From my experience of using Meta,
they do not have a lot of search results,
but their search results are very precise and accurate,
and they are relevant to what i'm searching for.
The results are also mainly articles and statistics,
with is very reliable.

The next type of a search is Subject Directory.
Although they have many search results for my topic,
i still prefer meta as Subject Directory does not have a lot of reports and articles.
Although Subject Directory search results are relevant,
it is not as specific and relevant as meta.

I have never heard of Meta nor Subject Directory,
but i'm glad that i've heard of it
and I will definitely be using them in the future.

Next, we had to include site feeds into our blogs!
You may have realized that i have site feeds to every single one of my classmates.
I personally do not have trouble in including the site feeds,
as i have been blogging for more than 3 years,
and i always play around with the codes in my template when i feel like changing my blogskin.

Next, we searched the INVISIBLE WEB to find more information and to widen our research.
Personally, i do not favor this method of searching for information and facts,
as i did not find anything that is relevant to my topic of research.
However, it is still useful as i can learn more information for my general knowledge.

As a conclusion,
i have learnt a lot today!
From the Meta Search to the Subject Delivery,
from the Invisible Web gateways to the databases,
from TP's E-books database.
And i have enjoyed every moment of it :)
